Sotogrande by Boat — Why It Is Worth the Journey

Maia Fair Team 2026-04-13 7 min read

Sotogrande is one of the Costa del Sol's best-kept secrets — or rather, a secret that the people who know about it prefer to keep. It is the most westerly port in the Mediterranean, a private residential development of considerable scale and elegance, and a destination that rewards those who make the effort to reach it. By road from Puerto Banus, Sotogrande is approximately 45 minutes. By sea aboard Maia Fair, it is a 90-minute coastal passage through some of the most spectacular scenery on the southern coast of Spain.

What Is Sotogrande?

Sotogrande was developed from the 1960s as a private residential resort on the western edge of the Costa del Sol, straddling the boundary between the provinces of Malaga and Cadiz. It is technically in the municipality of San Roque, Cadiz — just beyond the Andalucian end of the Costa del Sol — and this slight remove from the tourist mainstream is precisely what has allowed it to maintain its character.

The development covers approximately 2,000 hectares and includes the marina, residential zones, a polo club, equestrian facilities and seven golf courses — the most famous of which is Real Club Valderrama, host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and widely regarded as the finest golf course in continental Europe.

Sotogrande marina has approximately 1,200 berths and is consistently rated among the most beautiful marinas in the Mediterranean. The waterfront restaurants are excellent — fresh seafood, local catch and one of the calmer, less commercially intense atmospheres on the southern Spanish coast.

The Passage — Puerto Banus to Sotogrande

The 50km coastal passage from Puerto Banus to Sotogrande passes through some of the most varied and beautiful coastline between Marbella and the Campo de Gibraltar:

Sotogrande Marina — What to Expect

The marina at Sotogrande is one of the most beautiful on the Mediterranean coast. Unlike Puerto Banus, which can feel overwhelmed by its own celebrity in peak season, Sotogrande maintains a quieter, more understated atmosphere. The quayside restaurants serve excellent seafood — the proximity to the Atlantic fishing grounds west of Gibraltar means that the fish here is as fresh as it gets on this stretch of coast.

Arriving by private yacht from Puerto Banus rather than by road gives a completely different experience of the place. You arrive from the sea as the residents of Sotogrande do, with the marina opening ahead of you and the mountains of the Campo de Gibraltar behind. It is one of the most rewarding arrivals on the Costa del Sol.

Polo and Golf — The Other Sotogrande

Sotogrande is the polo capital of Spain. The Santa Maria Polo Club hosts the prestigious high-goal summer series from July to September, attracting the finest players in the world and a social scene that is as glamorous as anything in Puerto Banus but with considerably more grass. For those combining a charter day with an afternoon at the polo, the timing works well — arrive by sea in the morning, lunch at the marina, taxi to the polo in the afternoon.

Valderrama Golf Club, meanwhile, needs little introduction. Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and the venue for seven Volvo Masters, it is consistently ranked among the top ten courses in the world outside the United States. Non-members can play with advance booking, and the green fee is one of the more worthwhile expenditures on the Costa del Sol.

Why Sotogrande is Worth the Journey by Boat

Most visitors to the Costa del Sol who make it to Sotogrande do so by car — a 45-minute drive along the AP-7 that gives no indication of the coastal scenery between. The 50km sea passage is one of the arguments for a full-day extended Sotogrande yacht charter from Puerto Banus. You see the full sweep of the western Costa del Sol from the water, you arrive in style at one of the most beautiful marinas in the Mediterranean, and you return along the same coastline in the late afternoon with the light behind you and the Sierra Blanca visible ahead.

It is, in essence, the best possible way to experience 100km of the most spectacular coastline in Spain — there and back, with a perfect destination at the turning point.

Sotogrande is 50km from Puerto Banus by sea — accessible on a full-day extended charter with Maia Fair. Full-day charter packages from €7,000 (mid-season). Overnight charters to Sotogrande on application.
